Laser treatment could help improve sex for women

If you're a woman looking to improve your sex life, the best thing for you could be a laser.
Lake Oswego gynecologist Dr. Nancy Salisbury is offering a new FDA-approved treatment for women who suffer from vaginal atrophy. It's called Mona Lisa Touch.
The procedure involves using a laser to strip away older, thinner layers of the vaginal wall and stimulate growth of newer, healthier layers.
Salisbury compares the procedure to resurfacing a hardwood floor.
"We actually take the top layer off the hardwood floor and redo it," Salisbury said. "And the CO2 laser very similarly is re-surfacing the vagina."
Vaginal atrophy, typically brought on by lack of estrogen, decreases lubrication and can make sex painful.
Salisbury said half of post-menopausal women suffer from some form of pain or dryness during sex.
"I hear about the problem two or three times a day," she said, adding, "There's a lot of devastating consequences to losing a healthy, intimate relationship with your partner."
Salisbury said the treatment is an outpatient procedure that requires three sessions. It costs $2,000-$3,000 and is not covered by insurance.
But, she said, the procedure doesn't have any side effects and boasts a 95-percent success rate.
"It gives them hope for having rewarding intimacy again in their life," Salisbury said. "Women get tears in their eyes. They're so happy that there are choices for them."
